In this first of our three-concert 2015 series at the Melbourne Recital Centre we present a programme devoted to one of the most beloved baroque musical forms, the chaconne. Despite its simplicity, the chaconne bass line was the source of inspiration for countless musicians all across Europe.  We explore the melodic diversity and wide variety of colour in a range of chaconnes from tragic to buoyantly joyous, sending you home with a spring in your step.

A program of refinement and beauty - In the 18th century the court of Versailles represented the pinnacle of European society and good taste. From its elegant rules of social conduct and conversation to its rhetorical dance steps, the graces of French courtly behaviour were imitated all across the continent.  For the second concert in our 2015 subscription series, we present a program of refinement and beauty, designed to amuse the most sophisticated artistic taste of the French aristocracy.

For the final concert in our 2015 subscription series, we explore the dichotomy of early 17th century Italy with a program including the emotionally devout music of one of Italy’s rarely heard composers, Nicolo Corradini, and the music of Barbara Strozzi, one of Venice’s most famous courtesans. Beguiling soprano Anna Sandstrom and Matthew Manchester playing the evocative cornetto are guest artists in this rich programme where music of piety rubs shoulders with that of the darker side of everyday life.
