In the 17th Century, the Holy Roman Empire spanned almost the entire breadth of Europe, from Spain through to the Hungarian territories.  In this programme we present the most beautiful repertoire for violin, viola da gamba, harpsichord and theorbo from the heart of the empire, music that was as diverse, expressive and original as its homeland was rich in cultures and spiritual belief.

  • The Art of the German Trio Sonata

Seventeenth century music from the Italian Peninsula – a series of city states, united by only one thing: Faith.Contrafactum settings of Madrigals by Monteverdi and Cipriano da Rore, plus original instrumental music by Fontana, Merula and Castello are presented in the sequence of a Catholic Mass. Latitude 37 is joined for this program by Simon Rickard playing the Curtal; a fruity baroque antecedent of the modern day bassoon.

  • MRC subscription series concert 3: Ottoman Echoes

Regarded in the Baroque West as the scourge of Christianity, the Ottoman Empire was in reality a marvellous cultural Mecca of relative stability and peace. In this programme we present the wonderful sounds and instruments of 18th Century Constantinople and explore their striking connection with the musical colours of medieval Europe, with the exotic sounds of classical Ottoman instruments played by guest artists John Arcaro (percussion), Phil Gunter (oud) and Salih Resitoglou (kanun).
